Photography: a tool
A 360 viewer that keeps the image on your machine
A viewer for equirectangular panoramas that runs in the browser: drop one in, look around it, and check that the stitch is right. The picture is never uploaded anywhere, because the page has no server to upload it to.

What it does
- Drop a panorama
- Drop an equirectangular image on the page, or choose it from a file. That is the 2:1 picture a 360 camera or a stitching program writes, and it opens in the browser without being sent anywhere.
- Look around
- Drag to turn, scroll or pinch to zoom, and use the arrow keys to pan. The strip under the picture reads out the azimuth and the pitch of the view and draws which slice of the panorama is on the screen.
- Check the stitch
- The strip names the size of the source and says whether it is the 2:1 that a seamless panorama needs. Where there is a gap at the top or the bottom, which a drone cannot photograph, the viewer pads it so the picture still wraps all the way round.
- Keep it on your machine
- There is no server for the image to go to. The page has no mechanism to transmit anything, and that is set as a rule the browser enforces rather than as a promise in a policy. To see it for yourself, open the browser's network tab, drop an image in, and watch nothing happen.
The viewer is at 360viewer.traineffect.co.nz, and there is nothing to install and nothing to sign up for.
Where it came from
Drone panoramas for property and site work are stitched from many frames, and checking a stitch with a client used to mean uploading their site imagery to someone else's viewer. This one runs where the file already is, so the panorama goes to the client as the file plus this page to open it in, rather than as a hosted link that someone has to remember to take down later.
The photography behind it
Aerial and 360 work is part of the photography service, which photographs buildings, sites and places on commission in Wellington and across the country, and a panorama is one of the things a site shoot can deliver.
